Not Without My Sushi!

as-salaam aleikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

"you are what???"
my step-father said when I told him I am planning on moving to UAE. My mother is Japanese from Japan and my step-father is Japanese-American (full blooded Japanese but born and raised in the US). of course its the usual questioning of how women are treated and then my mother said "have you seen 'Not Without My Daughter?'" *roll eyes*

I could see my step-father took his time and was contemplating on what to tell me and then he says, "you know Uncle Charlie (also Japanese-American)? you know when his parents in Japan died, he decided to move to Japan and live in their home. but the problem is the Japanese people all knew he was American even though he looks Japanese. they can tell. and guess what? he was treated like an outsider. and now you are moving to a country with a completely different culture and you are REALLY going to be even more of an outsider. are you sure you want to do this?"

I reply back, "now if I told you I am moving to Japan would you seriously be giving me the lecture about Uncle Charlie's situation?" and he just started laughing because he even realized it was ridiculous. he wouldbe completey comfortable and happy if I was moving to Japan. I understood his concerns though. UAE is not like Japan, nor is it like the US, sooo many Americans assume when they hear United Arab Emirates, that it is just like the horrifying stories they hear about Saudi Arabia.

but everything didn't happen quickly, so over time my family, although concerned, were a bit more hopeful that everything would be alright. it took about a year and a half of him finding a job, us doing istikhaara, me flying to UAE to meet his family, then me going back home and more istikhaara. then life also happened, death in his family, marriage in his family, and finally we were able to marry. Alhamdulillah. but funny enough, we married in Australia and not UAE. he decided to study for his Master's so I flew there!! Then when he graduated we moved to UAE.

ha ha ha silly as it may be, one of my concerns was the availability of Japanese food, and especially sushi in UAE. sure I was exiiiiiited about getting to eat a bunch of home-cooked Arabic meals, but my favorite is Japanese. I would have been pretty concerned if sushi was not available at all, but my husband assured me there were a few Japanese restaurants. I can't imagine life without sushi!!!! ha ha ha but I'd still marry my husband even if it wasn't available. I'd just be really sad LOL and now there are quite a lot of Japanese restaurants here Alhamdulillah!! :D

so there is my short story of how I ended up in super duper sunny UAE :D

  3. as-salaam aleikum sister Flifla,

thanks for visiting my blog :D

ummm well, I don't know any single sisters in UAE personally, but there are lots of single women working and living here.

you don't have to be married to live here. :D

if you want to find more information, a site for expat women will be the best for you--here is the link:

    http://www.expatwoman.com/

they will be the experts and inshallah you will find the help there.

it is also important you ask questions about housing because nowadays people are able to negotiate lower rents and such because of the drop in demand for housing. and sad but true--people will try to take advantage of a person who doesn't know the housing situation now.

I don't know about it much as we are not renting so they have the experience. another thing is, before you used to have to pay a full years' rent in advance (crazy!!) in many places so people had to take loans from banks for it. now banks aren't giving loans easily like they used to so many landlords offer more broken down payments... but you have to watch out for those who will try to charge you more if you do not pay in one lump sum. I hear complaints about this lately in chats where expats are.

its not all a nightmare here though... you just have to be in the know so you don't get taken advantage of.

anyhow, inshallah you can find all the info you need sis :D

  7. Oh I forgot to tell, if you don't already know, that there is a really nice sushi restaurant near the airport where the Sheraton Hotel is (i think that it is the Sheraton Hotel). It is called Kiku. And my husband's friend owns a sushi restaurant near the Dubai Marina area called "So Cho's". I am craving sushi now!

  8. as-salaam aleikum,

maryann, nice to meet you!! I am sorry for the delay in my response..I just have been keeping myself busy these days.

I do like it here in UAE but not the loooong HOT summers!! lol

I think my husband and I tried Kiku before and if it is the place I think it is, it was DELICIOUS Mashallah. we just haven't been back since that first time. there are quite a lot of Japanese restaurants here now so it will take a while to try them all :D

Sho Cho's is a place I will try inshallah in the near future :D
